Description
Puccinia substriata is a specialized pathogenic fungus belonging to the order Pucciniales that causes a disease known as millet rust. As an obligate parasite, the pathogen requires a living host to complete its complex life cycle. It primarily affects cultivated and wild grasses, leading to severe physiological disruptions within the host plants.
The main crops susceptible to this fungal species are pearl millet and certain sorghum varieties. In its life cycle, the fungus often utilizes an alternate host, typically plants from the Oxalis family, which serves as the site for the aecial stage of development.
Symptoms of the disease manifest as characteristic pustules on leaf blades and sometimes on leaf sheaths. Initially, these appear as yellow-brown patches (urediniospores), but as the infection progresses, they develop into dark, almost black structures (teliospores). Infected leaves dry out prematurely, significantly hindering the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
Epiphytotic outbreaks are favored by warm, humid weather and the presence of leaf surface moisture, which is essential for spore germination. The fungus spreads efficiently via wind, carrying urediniospores over long distances, allowing the pathogen to rapidly colonize large agricultural areas during the active growing season.
The economic impact of millet rust lies in substantial yield reduction and decreased grain quality. Due to the diversion of nutrients to the fungal mycelium, plants produce shriveled grain with low starch content. Management strategies include:
- Cultivating resistant crop varieties
- Implementing proper crop rotation
- Weed control, especially of alternative hosts
- Judicious application of fungicides during high-humidity periods
