Tansy rust

The causal agent of tansy rust is the basidiomycete fungus Puccinia tanaceti. This is an obligate parasite that specifically infects members of the Asteraceae family, completing its life cycle by forming various types of spores that allow the fungus to persist and spread efficiently throughout the growing season.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are plants within the genus Tanacetum, including common tansy and various ornamental cultivars. The fungus attacks the leaves, stems, and petioles, drawing nutrients from the host plant and disrupting its normal physiological functions, which is particularly detrimental in fields grown for medicinal purposes.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, raised pustules on the underside of the leaves. Initially, these pustules are bright orange or yellow, releasing dusty urediniospores that facilitate rapid secondary infections. As the season progresses, these spots often transform into darker, brown-black telia, which serve as the resting stage of the fungus.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. High humidity levels, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the necessary moisture for spore germination and infection. Dense planting patterns that restrict airflow can lead to stagnant humid conditions, which significantly increase the severity of an outbreak.

The impact of tansy rust on crops is significant, as it leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, premature leaf senescence, and overall plant vigor decline. If left unmanaged, the infection can cause substantial yield losses and degradation of the quality of the essential oils and phytochemicals produced by the crop.
