Description
Puccinia trebouxii is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for causing onion rust. As an obligate parasite, it survives and thrives exclusively on living plant tissues, significantly impacting the health and productivity of various Allium species across diverse climatic regions.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include bulb onions, garlic, and shallots. The infection typically targets the leaves and scapes, which are essential for photosynthesis and energy storage, thereby directly undermining the development of the onion bulb itself.
Early symptoms present as small, yellowish spots scattered across the leaf blade. As the infection progresses, these spots develop into raised pustules containing a powdery, rust-colored mass of urediniospores that rupture the plant's epidermis, leaving the leaves weakened and susceptible to further decline.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the lifecycle of the fungus. High humidity, consistent dew, and moderate temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and rapid spread throughout the field. Inadequate spacing and poor air circulation often exacerbate the severity of the outbreak.
The damage caused by onion rust is substantial, characterized by premature leaf senescence and a reduction in the overall bulb size and weight. Severely infected crops lose their photosynthetic efficiency, leading to significant yield losses and reducing the storage quality of the harvested produce.
