The disease is caused by the fungus Puccinia venustula, which is a member of the rust fungi group. It functions as an obligate parasite, meaning it requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle. By extracting nutrients directly from the plant cells through specialized structures, the fungus disrupts the host's normal biological processes.

This pathogen primarily targets plants belonging to the Eranthis genus, commonly known as winter aconite. While primarily affecting these ornamental bulbous plants, the disease can also occur in natural habitats where the environmental conditions remain favorable for the fungal survival during the winter season.

Symptoms typically appear on the foliage as small, bright yellow to reddish-brown pustules. These structures contain thousands of fungal spores. As the infection progresses, the leaves may become distorted, chlorotic, and brittle, leading to premature wilting and a significant reduction in the aesthetic value of the garden display.

The development and spread of Puccinia venustula are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Cool, damp spring weather provides the ideal conditions for spore germination and rapid spread across the plant canopy. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for transferring spores to healthy tissues.

The damage caused by this rust is significant because it affects the plant's ability to store energy in the bulbs for the next season. Effective protection requires integrated management: removing and disposing of infected plant debris in the autumn, ensuring proper spacing for air circulation, and applying preventative fungicides during early growth stages.
