Description
The causative agent of this disease is a microscopic parasitic fungus Puccinia verbesinae, which belongs to the Basidiomycota division. It is an obligate parasite that affects plants of the Asteraceae family, specifically members of the Verbesina genus. The rust is characterized by the formation of pustules on the surface of leaves and stems, where the pathogen's spores mature.
The main crops at risk of infection by this fungus are wild and ornamental species of Verbesina. In agricultural ecosystems, if susceptible wild weeds grow near fields, the infection can spread, disrupting physiological development processes in plants and reducing the overall resistance of the ecosystem.
Symptoms of the infection appear as round or oval pustules of orange-brown or rusty color. They are usually located on the underside of the leaf. Severe development of the disease leads to premature yellowing and leaf drop, which significantly weakens the plant's photosynthetic apparatus.
The development of Puccinia verbesinae is favored by high humidity, frequent dew, and moderate temperatures in the range of 18–25°C. The fungus spreads via wind, rain splashes, and insects that carry spores to healthy tissues. In greenhouse environments or dense plantings, the risk of infection outbreaks increases due to poor air circulation.
The damage caused by rust consists of the depletion of the plant's nutrient reserves, disruption of water balance, and reduction in the quality of vegetative mass. To combat the pathogen, a complex of measures is used: crop rotation, destruction of weed reservoirs, and the application of fungicides upon the detection of the first signs of the disease.
