Description
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Puccinia verruca, an obligate parasite that specifically targets Allium species. As a rust fungus, it relies entirely on living plant tissue to complete its life cycle, severely impacting host plant metabolism.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are garlic and various onions. The disease can persist in crop residues and soil, making the management of infected debris a critical step in preventing recurrence in the subsequent planting season.
Symptoms typically include the appearance of small, round, or elongated rust-colored pustules on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions merge, leading to chlorosis, necrosis, and premature senescence of the foliage, which ultimately stunts the development of the bulb.
The development of the fungus is favored by high humidity, prolonged leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures. Under these conditions, the urediniospores are spread rapidly by wind, rain splashes, and human activity, facilitating widespread infection across fields.
Economic damage is caused by reduced bulb size and lower market quality. Effective control strategies involve an integrated approach:
- practicing rigorous crop rotation
- destroying infected plant debris
- selecting certified disease-free planting material
- maintaining proper plant spacing for better aeration
- applying chemical fungicides when conditions for infection are optimal
