Puccinia versicolor is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the Basidiomycota phylum that causes rust disease in plants of the Andropogon genus (bluestem). This pathogen is characterized by its complex life cycle involving multiple spore stages, which allows the fungus to persist in the environment and adapt to changing conditions in its host plants.

The primary hosts of this fungus are various species of bluestem grasses. These plants often serve as important components of grasslands and rangelands. While they are often considered hardy, infection by Puccinia versicolor can lead to a significant decline in the forage quality and overall physiological health of the stands.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease include the formation of numerous pustules, known as uredinia, on leaves and sheaths. These pustules appear as orange to reddish-brown spots containing fungal spores that rupture the plant epidermis. Severe infections result in extensive chlorosis, necrosis of the leaf tissues, and a substantial reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

The development and spread of Puccinia versicolor are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind, allowing for rapid colonization of healthy plants. Dew and light rainfall are essential for spore germination and successful infection of the host tissue.

The economic impact of the disease includes reduced biomass yields and diminished nutritional value of the grasses for livestock. Effective disease management requires an integrated approach to reduce the inoculum pressure in the field:

  • Timely harvesting or mowing of grass to prevent the spread of mature spores.
  • Management of grazing density to maintain healthy and vigorous plant growth.
  • Removal and destruction of plant debris that may harbor the fungus during the winter.
  • Application of specialized fungicides in nursery or seed production plots if infection levels are severe.
