Puccinia xanthii is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for the disease known as Xanthium rust. As an obligate parasite, it primarily infects plants within the genus Xanthium, such as the common cocklebur, which is a problematic weed in many agricultural regions across the globe.

The host range is typically limited to species within the Asteraceae family, specifically the genus Xanthium. Because of its high degree of host specificity, the pathogen does not affect cultivated crops, making it a subject of great interest for classical biological weed control programs aimed at reducing the density of cocklebur populations.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as small, yellowish chlorotic spots on leaves, which subsequently develop into raised pustules containing spores. Over time, these pustules darken to a brown or black color, signaling the release of urediniospores and teliospores. In severe cases, the infected plant exhibits reduced vigor, leaf necrosis, and stunted growth.

The development and spread of Puccinia xanthii are heavily influenced by environmental factors. Optimal disease progression occurs under conditions of moderate temperature (15–25°C) combined with high relative humidity. The presence of free moisture on the leaf surface is a prerequisite for spore germination and successful colonization of the host plant tissues.

Regarding its agricultural significance, Puccinia xanthii is valued for its potential to weaken weeds, thereby decreasing their competitive pressure on crops. Integrated pest management strategies leverage such biological agents to achieve sustainable weed control. Prophylactic measures usually focus on maintaining the ecological conditions necessary for the pathogen's natural cycle to effectively suppress host populations.
