Puccinia zoysiae is an obligate fungal pathogen responsible for the disease commonly known as Zoysia rust. This fungus specifically targets Zoysia grass species. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the living tissues of the host plant to complete its complex life cycle, which often includes the production of characteristic urediniospores.

The primary symptoms manifest on the leaf blades as small, raised pustules filled with rusty-orange or yellow-brown spores. These pustules eventually rupture, releasing spores that spread the infection. As the disease progresses, leaves become chlorotic, wither, and die, leading to an overall thinning of the turf and a significant aesthetic decline.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of the disease. Puccinia zoysiae thrives in warm, humid weather with temperatures typically ranging between 18°C and 25°C. Prolonged periods of leaf wetness, such as morning dew or excessive overhead irrigation, provide the ideal moisture necessary for spore germination and infection.

The impact of Zoysia rust on lawns is mainly characterized by reduced plant vigor. By depleting the plant's nutrient reserves, the fungus weakens the turf, making it less tolerant to drought, extreme cold, or other environmental stresses. In severe cases, the weakened lawn can lead to widespread patches of necrosis, damaging the overall root system.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical practices to suppress the pathogen. Maintaining good air circulation, mowing at appropriate heights, and removing clippings can help reduce humidity around the leaves. Fertilizer programs should avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes succulent growth susceptible to infection. When cultural controls are insufficient, systemic fungicides are used for targeted treatment.
