The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Pucciniastrum americanum, a member of the Pucciniastraceae family. This is a heteroecious rust fungus, meaning it requires two unrelated hosts to complete its life cycle: plants of the genus Rubus (raspberry) and the spruce tree (Picea species), which serves as an alternate host for the pathogen.

The primary host for this pathogen is the red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and several of its hybrids. While it primarily targets the foliage and fruit of raspberry plants, the life cycle involves a necessary stage on spruce needles. This unique biological relationship makes the proximity of spruce forests a critical risk factor for raspberry plantations.

The clinical symptoms of American raspberry rust include the appearance of small, bright yellow to orange pustules on the underside of leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots cause the leaves to curl, yellow, and drop prematurely. Fruit infections are particularly devastating, as they lead to the development of fungal spores directly on the drupelets, resulting in unmarketable produce.

The environmental development of the rust is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. Optimal conditions for spore germination and infection include cool to moderate temperatures accompanied by prolonged leaf wetness, such as that caused by heavy dew, fog, or frequent rain. Wind-borne aeciospores carry the infection from spruce trees to raspberry plants during the spring and early summer.

The economic impact of the disease is significant due to severe yield loss and reduced plant vigor. Integrated pest management strategies are crucial, starting with the removal of nearby spruce trees. It is also essential to maintain good air circulation through proper pruning, sanitation of debris in late autumn, and the application of appropriate fungicide treatments during the early growth stages to suppress spore development.
