The disease known as hazelnut rust is caused by the fungal pathogen Pucciniastrum coryli. This fungus is a specialized parasite that targets members of the Corylus genus, significantly impacting both wild hazel and commercial hazelnut production across various temperate regions.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are species such as Corylus avellana. The fungus thrives by extracting nutrients from the leaf tissues, which disrupts the photosynthetic process and compromises the overall health of the shrub during the peak of the growing season.
