Description

Hydrangea rust is caused by the fungal pathogen Pucciniastrum hydrangeae. It is a specialized parasitic fungus that infects the foliage of the plant, disrupting its normal physiological processes. The fungus completes its life cycle by producing spores that can survive in plant debris, making hygiene in the garden a critical factor in management.

The primary hosts of this disease are various species and cultivars of the Hydrangea genus. While not always fatal, the infection significantly impacts the aesthetic quality of the plants, which is a major concern for both commercial growers and amateur gardeners. Chronic infection weakens the plant, making it more susceptible to other stressors.

Symptoms typically begin with small, pale or yellowish spots on the upper leaf surfaces. As the disease progresses, distinctive rust-colored or orange pustules appear on the undersides of the leaves. These pustules represent the fungal fruiting bodies releasing spores. Infected leaves often turn yellow, wither, and drop prematurely, leading to defoliation.

High humidity and moderate temperatures are the primary environmental drivers for the development of Pucciniastrum hydrangeae. Wet leaves, often caused by overhead irrigation or poor site drainage, create the perfect conditions for spore germination and infection. Dense foliage without adequate airflow also accelerates the spread of the pathogen between adjacent plants.

Effective management strategies for hydrangea rust involve:

  • sanitation by removing and destroying all infected fallen leaves;
  • improving plant spacing to enhance air circulation within the canopy;
  • using targeted fungicides, particularly systemic products containing triazoles;
