While often mistaken for a serious fungal disease, it does not infect plant tissues or extract nutrients from the host, living purely on the bark surface as a substrate.

The biology of this lichen involves a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and photosynthetic algae. It requires moisture and stable environmental conditions to thrive. Its presence on orchard trees or forest species typically indicates that the tree's growth rate has slowed down, which is common in mature or ageing trees where the bark remains undisturbed for longer periods, allowing the lichen to colonize effectively.

This lichen is most commonly observed on deciduous trees, including fruit species like apple and pear. It appears as flat, leaf-like patches with a gray-green color, characterized by small white spots known as pseudocyphellae. It does not pose a direct threat of necrosis, but it is an indicator of the tree's physiological status and the environmental conditions within the orchard microclimate.

The harm associated with Punctelia hypoleucites is largely indirect. Its dense, persistent structure provides an ideal habitat for pests such as scale insects, mites, and various overwintering larvae, which can damage the tree. Moreover, excessive coverage might slightly impede the bark’s natural gas exchange or trap excessive moisture, which, over time, can create a more favorable environment for genuine pathogenic fungi.

Integrated management is the most effective approach to handle this lichen. Key methods include:

  • Thinning out the canopy to increase light penetration and air circulation.
  • Mechanical removal of the lichen from the bark using soft brushes or plastic scrapers.
  • Applying lime-wash to the trunks to prevent recolonization.
