Purpureocillium is a genus of fungi widely recognized in agricultural science for its entomopathogenic and nematophagous properties. While primarily beneficial for its ability to suppress plant-parasitic nematode populations, it can occasionally act as an opportunistic pathogen for plants under specific environmental conditions.
The causative agent of these effects is a soil-dwelling fungus. It plays a significant role in biological control by infecting the eggs of various nematodes, such as the root-knot nematode. By colonizing and consuming these eggs, the fungus acts as a natural suppressant of pest populations in the soil.
Plants at risk include greenhouse vegetable crops, ornamentals, and nursery seedlings. The risk of plant infection typically increases when the plants are already stressed, such as when soil moisture is excessively high or when the growing medium lacks proper drainage, allowing the fungus to colonize roots.
