White blister rust of salsify is a plant disease caused by the oomycete pathogen Pustula tragopogonis. Despite the common name "rust," the pathogen is taxonomically classified as a member of the order Peronosporales, which distinguishes it from true rust fungi and influences the choice of fungicides.
This disease primarily affects plants belonging to the Tragopogon genus, commonly known as salsify or goat's beard. It poses a significant threat to commercial crops where the roots are harvested or where plants are grown for ornamental purposes, potentially leading to total crop yield reduction.
Diagnostic symptoms include the development of pale or chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, corresponding to the appearance of white, blister-like pustules on the underside. These blisters rupture to release masses of white spores, which can rapidly spread across the entire canopy during favorable conditions.
The development of Pustula tragopogonis is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. The presence of leaf wetness is essential for the germination of sporangia and the subsequent infection of host tissues, making rainy seasons particularly high-risk periods.
