In agricultural and forestry contexts, it is recognized as the causal agent of brown rot, a process where the fungus consumes cellulose within the wood, leaving behind a fragile, cubical, and structurally compromised woody structure.

The host range of this pathogen primarily includes conifers, such as spruce and fir, but it can also affect various deciduous species if they are weakened or damaged. In fruit orchards, the presence of Pycnoporellus is often associated with neglected trees or sites where pruning wounds and bark damage have been left untreated, providing an entry point for fungal spores.
