Pycnoporus is a genus of wood-decay fungi recognized in agronomy as a primary agent of white rot. These fungi are saprotrophs that function as opportunistic pathogens, capable of invading weakened trees and causing structural degradation of the wood through the enzymatic breakdown of lignin and cellulose components.
The fungus typically attacks various deciduous trees, with significant implications for fruit orchards including apple, pear, and plum varieties. Infection occurs primarily through entry points such as pruning wounds, cracked bark, or damage caused by environmental stressors like frost or hail, where the fungal spores settle and begin colonization.
Symptoms of infestation are marked by the formation of distinctive, bright cinnabar-red or orange-colored leathery fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches. Internally, the fungus decomposes the wood, turning it into a light-colored, fibrous mass.
