Pyrenochaeta root rot is a destructive plant disease caused by fungi belonging to the Pyrenochaeta genus. This pathogen is known for attacking the roots of various plants, leading to severe root system decay, impaired nutrient uptake, and ultimately the stunted growth or death of the host plant.

The disease affects a wide range of crops, with tomatoes, onions, and various greenhouse-grown vegetables being the most susceptible. The fungus typically invades through existing damage in the roots or areas stressed by environmental conditions, establishing itself within the vascular system and cortical tissues.

Symptoms often manifest as systemic yellowing of the leaves, starting from the bottom, followed by wilting that occurs even when the soil moisture is sufficient. A key visual indicator is the presence of brown or black necrotic lesions on the roots and the formation of tiny, black pycnidia on the root surface, which release spores to spread the infection.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Pyrenochaeta. High humidity, warm soil temperatures, and poor soil drainage create the ideal environment for the pathogen to thrive and proliferate. Once introduced into a field or greenhouse, the fungus can persist for many years in soil debris, making it a persistent threat to future crops.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Preventive strategies include rigorous sanitation, such as removing infected plant debris and disinfecting tools. Crop rotation is essential in open fields, while in greenhouses, steam sterilization of soil or the use of sterile growing media is recommended to eliminate the pathogen from the root zone environment.
