Description

Light leaf spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Pyrenopeziza brassicae (anamorph Cylindrosporium concentricum), is a major disease affecting brassica crops worldwide. This disease is particularly destructive in regions with high rainfall and moderate temperatures, often leading to substantial yield losses in oilseed rape and vegetable brassicas.

The host range of this fungus includes oilseed rape (canola), cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and various cruciferous weeds. The pathogen can infect plants at any growth stage, from seedlings to mature plants, significantly impacting the structural and physiological integrity of the crop.

Symptoms initially appear as small, pale, or off-white spots on leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, these spots develop small, dark-colored fruiting bodies arranged in concentric rings. In severe cases, the infected leaves become chlorotic, wither, and drop prematurely, which severely reduces the photosynthetic capacity and overall health of the plant.

The development and spread of Pyrenopeziza brassicae are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and mild temperatures. Rain splash is the primary mechanism for the dispersal of spores within the canopy. The fungus is capable of surviving on infected crop residues throughout the growing season and winter, serving as a primary inoculum source for subsequent crops.

Integrated disease management is essential to minimize the impact of light leaf spot. This includes:

  • selecting resistant or tolerant crop varieties;
  • practicing a robust crop rotation with a gap of at least three years for brassicas;
  • thoroughly incorporating crop debris into the soil;
  • timely application of fungicides when weather conditions are conducive to disease outbreaks.
