Description
Tan spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (anamorph Drechslera tritici-repentis), is a significant foliar disease affecting wheat and other cereal crops worldwide. The fungus is responsible for substantial yield losses, particularly in regions where wheat is grown consecutively or under reduced tillage systems.
The host range of Pyrenophora includes wheat, barley, rye, and various wild grasses. The pathogen survives the winter in the form of pseudothecia on infected crop residues from the previous season. As temperatures rise in the spring, these structures produce ascospores, which are the primary inoculum that initiates the infection process on newly emerged leaves.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, dark brown spots surrounded by a characteristic yellow or chlorotic halo. Under favorable environmental conditions, these spots expand, coalesce, and cause necrotic tissue death. Severe infection results in premature leaf senescence, which directly interferes with the photosynthetic capacity of the plant during the critical grain-filling period.
The disease development is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Prolonged leaf wetness periods are essential for spore germination and successful infection. Areas with frequent rainfall and significant dew patterns provide ideal conditions for the pathogen to spread via wind-borne conidia throughout the growing season.
Effective management of Tan Spot requires a multi-faceted approach to reduce initial inoculum levels and prevent secondary spread. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are key to minimizing the economic impact.
