Net blotch, caused by the fungus Pyrenophora catenaria (anamorph Drechslera catenaria), is a significant fungal disease impacting the productivity of various cereal crops. By causing characteristic lesions on leaves, the pathogen reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity and can lead to substantial yield losses if not managed properly.

The disease primarily targets barley, oats, and wheat, as well as various wild grass species. The pathogen survives between cropping seasons in infected crop debris, within the soil, and on seeds, making it a persistent threat in regions with favorable environmental conditions for fungal development.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as elongated, dark brown or grayish lesions that may be surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, these spots can coalesce, eventually covering large portions of the leaf surface, which causes leaf necrosis and premature senescence of the foliage.

Favorable conditions for the spread of Pyrenophora catenaria include high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. These conditions facilitate the rapid production of spores, which are then disseminated by wind and rain splashing, leading to secondary infections throughout the growing season.

Management strategies focus on breaking the disease cycle through integrated pest management (IPM). This includes crop rotation, thorough incorporation of stubble into the soil, and the use of certified, treated seed. Foliar fungicide applications are essential when disease pressure is high, particularly during the stem elongation and heading stages.
