The causative agent of barley leaf blotch is the fungus Pyrenophora erythrospila (anamorph Drechslera erythrospila). This pathogen specifically targets barley crops, leading to significant foliage damage. It is a serious fungal disease that can compromise grain yield and overall plant vigor if left unmanaged during the growing season.

Barley is the primary host for this fungus. The pathogen survives the winter in infected crop residues or as dormant mycelium on seeds. During the growing season, conidia are produced and disseminated through wind and rain splash, which effectively transfers the disease from older, lower leaves to newly emerging upper leaves.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease include the appearance of small, round to oval reddish-brown spots on the leaf blades. These lesions are frequently surrounded by a distinct yellow chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, the lesions may coalesce, leading to severe chlorosis and necrosis of the entire leaf surface, thereby inhibiting photosynthesis.

The development of Pyrenophora erythrospila is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. Extended periods of rainfall or leaf wetness are critical for spore germination and successful host penetration. High plant density promotes the spread of the fungus by retaining humidity within the crop canopy.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to reduced grain filling and weight loss. Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers are advised to utilize resistant varieties, rotate crops to break the disease cycle, and bury crop debris to reduce inoculum sources. Fungicide applications remain the primary chemical measure for curative and protective control during the vegetation period.
