Description
The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Pyrenophora grahamii, which is a significant pathogen affecting various grass species. The fungus completes its life cycle by producing spores on infected debris, utilizing both asexual (Drechslera dictyoides) and sexual stages to survive adverse weather conditions during the off-season.
Target hosts include several species of fescue, such as tall fescue and meadow fescue. It is a common problem in both agricultural forage production and high-maintenance turfgrass systems, where the physiological stress of frequent cutting can exacerbate the susceptibility of the plants.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, brown, elongated lesions that eventually develop into characteristic spots. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, covering large areas of the leaf blade, which leads to necrotic tissue formation, yellowing, and eventual premature death of the foliage.
The development of Pyrenophora grahamii is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture and temperature. High humidity, heavy morning dews, and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C are the primary drivers for spore germination and rapid secondary infection cycles within a grass canopy.
The economic impact is significant, as the disease reduces forage quality and biomass yield. In ornamental turf, it creates unsightly patches, disrupting the uniformity and health of the grass. Neglected infections can lead to severe thinning of the sward, necessitating costly renovation and replanting.
- Remove and destroy infected plant debris to reduce inoculum.
