Description
Barley stripe is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Pyrenophora graminea (anamorph Drechslera graminea). This pathogen specifically targets barley crops and is primarily seed-borne, meaning the fungus overwinters as mycelium within the seed, initiating infection as soon as the seed germinates.
The characteristic symptoms begin as pale yellow, linear stripes on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these stripes turn dark brown and necrotic. A definitive sign of the disease is the shredding of leaf tissue along these stripes, which gives the leaves a characteristic ragged, shredded appearance as the plant enters the heading stage.
The development of the disease is favored by cool, moist conditions during the early growth stages of barley. Soil temperatures between 10°C and 15°C are optimal for the fungus to infect the coleoptile of the developing seedling. Once infected, the fungus grows systemically within the plant, moving up with the growing point to colonize leaves and eventually the spikes.
Barley stripe causes significant economic losses by reducing crop vigor, plant height, and tillering capacity. Severely infected plants often fail to produce a spike, or produce only stunted, discolored heads with shriveled grains. This leads to substantial reductions in both yield and the overall quality of the harvested grain.
Integrated management is essential for effective control. The most critical step is the use of certified, disease-free seed and thorough seed treatment with effective systemic fungicides. Additionally, agronomic practices such as crop rotation, selecting resistant barley cultivars, and optimizing sowing depths to ensure quick emergence are vital to minimize disease incidence.
