Description
Tan spot, caused by the fungus Pyrenophora trichostoma (anamorph Drechslera tritici-repentis), is a destructive foliar disease affecting wheat crops globally. This pathogen belongs to the ascomycete family and is particularly problematic in regions practicing reduced tillage, as the fungus overwinters on wheat stubble and crop residues left on the soil surface.
The host range of this pathogen primarily includes common and durum wheat, though it can also infect barley and various wild grasses. By utilizing crop residue as a primary inoculum source, the fungus can effectively establish itself in a field early in the growing season, posing a continuous threat to susceptible varieties.
Initial symptoms of the disease appear as small, tan-colored spots surrounded by a distinct yellow chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses under favorable conditions, these spots expand, coalesce, and result in large necrotic patches.
