Pyrenula is a genus of fungi that frequently exists in a symbiotic relationship with algae, forming crustose lichens on tree bark. In an agricultural context, these organisms are considered epiphytes, utilizing the tree as a physical anchor rather than a nutritional source, although their presence can indicate a decline in tree vigor.

The causative agents belong to the genus Pyrenula. They colonize bark surfaces where environmental conditions remain moist for extended periods. While not primary pathogens, they can create a micro-environment on the bark surface that interferes with normal lenticel respiration and shields pests.

These lichens commonly affect fruit-bearing trees such as apple, pear, and various stone fruits, especially in older, poorly maintained orchards. Poor light penetration and high humidity within the canopy create the ideal environmental conditions for these fungal colonies to thrive and spread.

Symptoms are identified by the appearance of dark, often black or greyish, crusty spots on the bark of trunks and scaffold branches. Over time, the affected areas may lead to bark roughening, cracking, or premature cork formation, which subsequently attracts secondary pests or wood-rotting pathogens.

Effective management focuses on preventive horticultural practices and chemical control:

  • Regular pruning to ensure adequate sunlight and airflow throughout the canopy.
  • Manual scraping of old, dead bark during dormant seasons.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides during early spring to sanitize the bark surface.
  • Improving overall tree health through balanced fertilization and stress management to prevent future colonization.
