Rice blast is a destructive fungal disease caused by pathogens in the Pyriculariaceae family, primarily Pyricularia oryzae. This disease is recognized as one of the most significant threats to global cereal production, capable of causing widespread yield losses in rice-growing regions and increasingly affecting wheat crops.

The disease affects a variety of cereal crops, including rice, wheat, and barley. The pathogen targets all above-ground parts of the plant, such as leaves, leaf sheaths, stems, nodes, and panicles. If the infection reaches the node of the panicle, it effectively cuts off nutrient flow, resulting in the death of the entire head.

Diagnostic symptoms typically appear as diamond or spindle-shaped spots on leaves, featuring a grey, necrotic center surrounded by a brownish border. During humid conditions, a fuzzy, olive-grey spore mass develops on the lesions. Stem node infection leads to localized browning and weakening, often causing the plant to snap or lodge.

Epidemics are driven by environmental factors, particularly high relative humidity (above 90%), prolonged leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures between 25°C and 28°C. Dense canopy growth and heavy nitrogen fertilization create a microclimate that facilitates rapid fungal growth and sporulation, allowing the disease to spread via wind-borne conidia.
