Pyrofomes is a genus of bracket fungi that serves as a potent pathogen for various woody plants, causing primarily white rot. These fungi are characterized by their ability to decompose lignin and cellulose, which are the main structural components of wood, leading to the gradual decline and eventual death of the affected trees.

This fungus typically affects a wide range of broadleaf and coniferous trees. It is frequently found in mature forests, orchard ecosystems, and urban tree plantings. The presence of the pathogen often signifies an underlying issue with tree vitality, as it primarily targets older or structurally compromised individuals.

The primary diagnostic symptom of a Pyrofomes infection is the appearance of perennial, woody fruiting bodies on the trunk or exposed root zones. These basidiocarps are often hoof-shaped, very hard, and feature a dark, crusty surface. Internally, the wood becomes discolored, fibrous, and loses its structural integrity over time.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly moisture availability and temperature. The infection process begins when fungal spores enter through wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the heartwood, weakening the tree from the inside out.

Managing the disease requires a proactive approach centered on prevention and sanitation. Owners should prioritize the following:

  • Regular inspection of bark and structural wood for fungal growths.
  • Proper pruning techniques to avoid creating entry points for spores.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of infected wood to reduce spore load.
