Description
Juniper bracket (Pyrofomes demidoffii) is a serious wood-decaying fungus that acts as a pathogen for various juniper species. It belongs to the Polyporaceae family and is known for causing severe white heart rot within the trunk of host trees. This infection is a chronic disease that can lead to the eventual mortality of infected trees in both natural forests and landscape plantings.
The fungus specifically targets the wood of the genus Juniperus. It enters the host plant through wounds caused by pruning, breakage, frost cracks, or animal damage. Once inside, the mycelium begins to break down the wood structure, drawing nutrients from the heartwood, which eventually compromises the tree's structural integrity.
Visual symptoms include the development of perennial, woody, hoof-shaped or cushion-like fruiting bodies on the trunk. Internally, the wood undergoes significant changes: it becomes fibrous, bleached, and often exhibits thin dark lines (zone lines). These signs indicate a advanced stage of rot, making the trunk susceptible to fracturing under stress.
Environmental conditions such as appropriate moisture levels and temperatures play a critical role in the fungus's lifecycle. Spore dispersal happens primarily through the air, spreading the infection to new, vulnerable trees. The fungus favors mature trees, as they often have more heartwood and accumulated wounds, which provide the necessary access points for colonization.
Management of Juniper bracket relies heavily on sanitation. Infected trees should be identified and removed from the area to prevent the release of spores into the environment. Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and minimizing physical damage to the bark are essential preventative steps. Currently, there are no curative systemic fungicides to treat internal rot, making preventive care the only viable long-term strategy.
