Description
Pyronema is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Pezizales. In an agricultural context, it is often referred to as an "opportunistic" fungus. While it is primarily a saprotroph that feeds on decaying organic matter, its appearance in nursery beds and greenhouses is considered a symptom of imbalanced soil biology and poor environmental management.
The pathogen thrives in substrates that have been recently sterilized, steamed, or treated with chemicals. Because sterilization removes beneficial microbial competitors, Pyronema species like Pyronema omphalodes can rapidly colonize the soil surface, forming distinct, bright orange or salmon-colored mycelial patches that are easily identifiable by growers.
This fungus primarily affects greenhouse-grown seedlings and young transplants. While the fungus does not directly digest healthy living plant tissue, the dense mat of mycelium it creates on the surface impedes oxygen exchange to the roots and can harbor secondary pathogens, eventually leading to stunted growth, nutrient lockout, and the onset of "damping-off" symptoms.
Development and spread are heavily dependent on high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Poor ventilation in greenhouses exacerbates the issue, creating a microclimate where the fungus can reproduce sexually through apothecia, releasing spores that quickly infest surrounding pots and trays, especially in soils rich in uncomposted organic material.
Management strategies focus on restoring soil health and environmental control. Key preventative measures include avoiding over-irrigation, ensuring high-frequency air exchange, and inoculating sterilized soil with beneficial soil microorganisms like Trichoderma to rebuild microbial diversity. Maintaining proper soil structure is essential to prevent the surface compaction that encourages fungal proliferation.
