Pyronema omphalodes is an ascomycete fungus often found on soil surfaces, particularly in greenhouse environments following soil sterilization or heat treatment. It typically functions as a saprotrophic fungus but can become a significant nuisance for commercial greenhouse operations, affecting the development of young seedlings.

The fungus is primarily a colonizer of disturbed or sterilized soil. It exploits environments where natural competing microbial populations have been reduced, allowing it to grow rapidly across the surface of growing media that is rich in organic matter or has been recently processed.

Seedlings of various vegetable and ornamental crops are susceptible to the indirect effects of this fungus. While it does not typically penetrate plant tissues, its presence is a major agronomic concern in seedbeds, trays, and pots where consistent moisture levels are maintained for early-stage plant growth.

Symptoms are identified by the emergence of distinctive orange-pink or coral-colored fungal mats covering the soil surface. These mats can form a dense, hydrophobic crust that prevents water penetration and soil aeration. This physical barrier leads to root suffocation, nutrient uptake failure, and the eventual damping-off or stunting of young, fragile plant shoots.

Effective management and protection strategies focus on maintaining a healthy growing environment. Prevention is key:

  • use high-quality, properly prepared substrates;
  • avoid over-irrigation that keeps the surface consistently wet;
  • implement good ventilation protocols to manage humidity levels;
  • provide adequate light and airflow to discourage surface fungal growth.
If outbreaks occur, shallow mechanical cultivation to disrupt the mycelial network is often the most effective immediate control method.
