Pyrrhoderma is a genus of fungi within the Hymenochaetaceae family, commonly identified as a wood-decay pathogen. In the context of arboriculture and forestry, this organism is responsible for causing heart rot and trunk decay in various broad-leaved tree species. As a parasite, it infiltrates the tree's internal vascular and structural tissues, leading to gradual wood degradation.

Host range primarily includes deciduous trees such as oak and birch, though it may also impact fruit-bearing trees under specific conditions. The pathogen enters the host through physical injuries, including broken limbs, unhealed pruning wounds, or frost cracks in the bark. Once inside, the mycelium begins to colonize the heartwood, weakening the tree's overall structural integrity.

Key symptoms of Pyrrhoderma infection include the emergence of perennial, hoof-shaped, or bracket-like fruiting bodies on the trunk or large branches. The surface of these fruiting bodies is typically dark, often appearing black or dark brown with distinct concentric zones. Internal decay is characterized by the whitening and softening of the wood, which can compromise the stability of the entire tree.

Environmental conditions conducive to the development of this disease include high humidity and shaded environments, which facilitate the germination of spores and the subsequent spread of the mycelium. The disease is most active during the growing season when temperatures are warm and moisture levels are consistently high, allowing the fungus to progress deeper into the wood structure.

The economic and ecological impact of Pyrrhoderma is significant due to the loss of timber value and the increased risk of tree mortality. Management strategies emphasize prevention:

  • Avoiding unnecessary mechanical damage to the trunk;
  • Proper and timely pruning of diseased branches;
  • Application of protective sealants to large wounds;
