Description

The Pythiaceae family represents a group of soil-borne oomycetes, which are primary pathogens responsible for significant agricultural losses worldwide. Although often referred to as "water molds," they share more evolutionary similarities with algae than with true fungi, which dictates the specific approach required for their management.

These pathogens exhibit a wide host range, infecting various vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and field crops. They are notorious for causing damping-off, a destructive disease that kills seedlings before or shortly after emergence, as well as debilitating root rots in mature plants that impair nutrient and water uptake.

The symptoms of infection typically include water-soaked lesions on roots and the hypocotyl area, leading to decay and tissue discoloration. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and sudden wilting. Because root damage is often internal, the disease may go unnoticed until the plant collapses or dies.

Development and spread of Pythiaceae are heavily dependent on high moisture conditions. The pathogen produces zoospores that move through water films in the soil to infect roots. Therefore, poor soil drainage, over-irrigation, and high humidity in greenhouses create an ideal environment for rapid disease outbreaks.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control of these pathogens:

  • Improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  • Implementing rigorous sanitation protocols in greenhouses.
  • Utilizing treated seeds and high-quality, pathogen-free growing media.
  • Employing biological control agents like Trichoderma or Bacillus species.
  • Applying systemic fungicides specifically targeted at oomycetes when environmental conditions favor disease development.
