Pythium abappressorium is a soil-borne pathogenic oomycete belonging to the Pythiaceae family. This microorganism is a primary causative agent of various root rots and damping-off, posing a significant threat to both greenhouse operations and open-field agriculture.
The pathogen primarily attacks the root systems of a wide range of agricultural crops, including vegetables, ornamental plants, and certain cereals. It is particularly destructive during the early seedling stages when plant tissues are most susceptible to infection.
Key symptoms of infection include browning and decay of the roots, stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and subsequent wilting of the aerial parts. Under high humidity, a white, cotton-like mycelium may appear at the root collar, indicating the active growth of the organism.
The development of Pythium abappressorium is favored by excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and cool temperatures combined with high planting density. The oomycete can persist in the soil for long periods as oospores, which are highly resistant to adverse environmental conditions and easily spread via irrigation water and contaminated tools.
Effective control measures require a multi-faceted approach: using high-quality sterilized substrates, implementing proper irrigation management, and applying fungicides based on metalaxyl or propamocarb. Essential preventive practices include regular sanitation of equipment and containers, as well as maintaining optimal temperature levels within greenhouses.
