This pathogen has a wide host range, affecting various agricultural crops, ornamental flowers, and nursery seedlings. Pythium acanthicum is particularly problematic during the early stages of plant development, when the root system is tender and highly susceptible to enzymatic degradation caused by the pathogen's activity.

Common symptoms include stunted growth, chlorosis, and sudden wilting of plants. Upon inspection, the roots appear brown, slimy, and soft, indicating necrotic decay.
