Description

Pythium attrantheridium is a soilborne oomycete pathogen responsible for root rot and seedling damping-off in various agricultural crops. As a facultative parasite, it thrives in moist soil conditions, surviving harsh environmental periods through the production of durable oospores, which act as primary inoculum for future infection cycles.

This pathogen poses a significant threat to a wide range of horticultural crops, including greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Ornamental plants are also frequently affected. The infection typically targets the fine root hairs and lateral roots, progressively damaging the root system's ability to uptake water and nutrients essential for normal plant growth.

Early symptoms of infection often appear as a stunted growth habit, yellowing leaves, and wilting during the hottest part of the day. A diagnostic examination of the root system reveals brown, soft, and necrotic tissues. The outer layer of the root (cortex) may easily slough off, leaving only the central vascular cylinder, which indicates severe destruction of the root structure.

The development and spread of Pythium attrantheridium are primarily driven by waterlogged soil conditions and poor substrate drainage. The pathogen produces motile zoospores that swim through water films to reach healthy roots. Consequently, the infection spreads rapidly in greenhouse conditions where constant moisture is maintained, particularly if irrigation water or equipment is contaminated.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach, starting with high hygiene standards in nursery production. Key preventative measures include the use of sterilized growing media, proper drainage, and controlled irrigation scheduling. Biocontrol agents, such as beneficial bacteria and fungi, can help suppress the pathogen, while targeted chemical applications are reserved for managing outbreaks in high-risk professional growing environments.
