Pythium betae is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen recognized as a primary agent of damping-off and seedling blight in sugar beets. This pathogen thrives in cool, wet soil environments and is a major threat to crop emergence and initial stand establishment.

The primary host of this pathogen is sugar beet, but the organism can survive as oospores in the soil for several years. It specifically targets the subterranean parts of the seedling before they have a chance to establish a robust root system.

The characteristic symptoms include the browning and softening of the hypocotyl and the emerging radicle. Severely infected seedlings decay rapidly, often failing to emerge or collapsing shortly after emergence, leading to significant gaps in the field rows.
