Pythium conidiophorum is a soil-borne pathogen belonging to the class Oomycetes, causing severe root rot and damping-off in various agricultural and ornamental crops. This organism thrives in aquatic environments and moisture-saturated substrates, where its motile zoospores can easily travel to find healthy host roots.

The pathogen attacks a wide range of plants, including vegetables, cereals, oilseeds, and turf grasses. Seedlings and young transplants are particularly vulnerable because their root systems lack sufficient lignification, making them easy targets for the pathogen to penetrate and colonize rapidly.

Key symptoms of the infection include darkening and soft rotting of the root neck, stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and sudden wilting. A close inspection of the roots reveals a brown discoloration, the death of fine lateral root hairs, and often a distinctive, foul-smelling rot.

Disease progression is primarily driven by high soil moisture levels, over-irrigation, poor substrate aeration, and inadequate drainage systems. The pathogen prefers moderate temperatures and spreads rapidly through contaminated soil, infested garden tools, or irrigation water systems.

Control measures rely on an integrated pest management approach: soil sterilization, improved drainage, strict irrigation scheduling, and the application of fungicides such as phenylamides or strobilurins. Preventive seed treatment and the selection of resistant cultivars are essential strategies to minimize economic losses caused by this oomycete.
