Description
The disease is caused by the oomycete Pythium debaryanum, a dangerous soil-borne pathogen. It is best known for causing "damping-off" in seedlings, a condition that can destroy an entire crop in a very short period. The organism persists in the soil through resilient oospores, which allow it to survive harsh conditions for many seasons.
This pathogen has a wide host range, attacking virtually all vegetable, flower, and grain crops at the germination and seedling stages. It is especially problematic in greenhouses where young plants are grown in confined environments. The infection usually starts when roots encounter the pathogen in damp, unsterilized soil or through contaminated irrigation water.
Symptoms typically manifest as a darkening and softening of the stem base at the soil line. The stem becomes water-soaked and shriveled, leading to the collapse and death of the seedling. In many cases, the root system itself also turns brown and decays, preventing the plant from absorbing nutrients and water, eventually leading to complete wilting.
High soil moisture, poor drainage, cool temperatures, and low light are the primary factors that favor the development of Pythium debaryanum. When seedlings are planted too densely, the lack of air circulation creates a perfect humid microclimate for the pathogen to thrive and spread rapidly from plant to plant, often wiping out entire trays of seedlings.
Management and prevention require a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to minimize the risk of infection. Effective practices include:
- Sterilizing growing media before sowing seeds.
- Ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow.
- Managing irrigation to avoid waterlogged conditions.
- Using certified disease-free seeds and applying preventative fungicidal treatments when necessary.
