Description

The causative agent of the disease is the oomycete Globisporangium irregulare, formerly classified as Pythium irregulare. It is a persistent soilborne pathogen that infects the root system, seeds, and seedlings of a wide range of hosts, including common beans, ornamental plants, and various vegetable crops.

The disease is characterized as root rot and damping-off. The pathogen persists in the soil through the production of oospores, which are dormant structures capable of surviving for several years, ensuring the disease remains a significant threat in fields with a history of infestation.

Visible symptoms include stunting, chlorosis of leaves, and sudden wilting. A diagnostic inspection of the roots typically reveals discoloration, softening of the root tissues, and decay. In severe cases, the entire root architecture is destroyed, resulting in the collapse and death of the plant.

The development and spread of Globisporangium irregulare are favored by high soil moisture, poor drainage, and cool temperatures during the germination phase. These conditions facilitate the release and movement of zoospores, which actively seek out host root exudates to initiate new infections.

Management strategies focus on preventive measures, including the use of high-quality seeds, improving soil aeration through proper drainage, and strict adherence to crop rotation. Chemical control involves the application of specialized fungicides effective against water molds, though cultural practices remain the primary line of defense.
