Pythium erinaceum is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen notorious for causing root rot in a wide variety of plant species. As a water mold, it thrives in damp environments, targeting the root systems of seedlings and mature plants, which leads to significant physiological stress and reduced crop yields.
This pathogen primarily infects crops grown in greenhouses, nurseries, and hydroponic systems, as well as plants in poorly drained agricultural fields. It is a major threat to vegetable crops, ornamental flowers, and various tree saplings, particularly during the early stages of their growth cycle when root development is most critical.
Symptoms of Pythium infection often begin underground before becoming visible on the foliage. Initial signs include chlorosis, wilting during hot periods, and stunted growth. Upon inspection, root systems exhibit signs of browning, softening of root tissues, and loss of fine lateral roots, often resulting in the sloughing off of the outer root epidermis.
The development of Pythium erinaceum is heavily dependent on moisture levels. The pathogen produces motile zoospores that require water to swim and locate host roots. Overwatering, excessive soil compaction, and poor drainage are the primary factors that facilitate the rapid spread of the disease across infected sites.

Key practices include using high-quality pathogen-free growth media, implementing strict greenhouse sanitation, and ensuring proper drainage. Fungicides specific to oomycetes and biological control agents, such as beneficial fungi and bacteria, are frequently used to prevent outbreaks.
