Pythium hydnosporum is a soil-borne pathogen belonging to the oomycetes class. It is a known causative agent of root rot in a wide variety of crops. Unlike true fungi, this pathogen reproduces by forming motile zoospores that navigate through soil water films to infect the roots of host plants, leading to severe physiological stress.
The host range of this pathogen is broad, including cereals, vegetable crops, and ornamental plants. It is particularly devastating in nurseries and greenhouses where young seedlings are exposed to moist conditions. The lack of robust root development in young plants makes them highly susceptible to invasion by Pythium species.
Symptoms of the disease include root discoloration, softening, and tissue decay. Infected plants typically display stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting. In conditions of high soil moisture, the disease can manifest as "damping-off," where seedlings collapse rapidly due to the destruction of their root system and the base of the stem.
The development of Pythium hydnosporum is heavily dependent on soil moisture levels. Poorly drained soils, over-irrigation, and cool temperature ranges facilitate the movement of zoospores. The pathogen produces long-lived oospores that can persist in the soil for several seasons, making complete eradication extremely difficult.
