Description

The pathogen Pythium inflatum is a soil-borne oomycete responsible for severe root rot infections in a wide range of plants. It acts primarily as a parasite on root systems, causing damping-off of seedlings and systemic decay of roots in mature specimens. Due to its aggressive nature, it is a significant threat to greenhouses and nurseries globally.

This pathogen targets various crops, including popular vegetables, bedding plants, and specific ornamental species. It infects the plants by invading root hair cells, rapidly spreading through the vascular tissue, and eventually leading to the total destruction of the underground part of the plant. The pathogen can remain latent in the soil for extended periods as resilient oospores.

Typical symptoms of infection include:

  • Browning and softening of the root system.
  • Stunted growth and yellowing of the foliage.
  • Sudden wilting, particularly during hot hours of the day.
  • Easy detachment of the root cortex from the central vascular cylinder.

The environmental factors favoring the development of Pythium inflatum are primarily related to water management. Over-saturation of the substrate, poor drainage, and low soil temperatures create an ideal environment for the zoospores to swim and locate new hosts. Contaminated equipment, potting mix, or irrigation water are the main vectors for introducing this pathogen into a production site.

Management and prevention require a multi-faceted approach. Sanitation is the first line of defense: ensuring all pots and equipment are sterilized is crucial. Growers should focus on maintaining adequate soil aeration and avoiding excess irrigation. Biological controls, such as beneficial fungi, can suppress the pathogen, while chemical fungicides may be employed in high-pressure situations to mitigate damage.
