Description
Pythium intermedium is a significant soilborne oomycete pathogen known for causing root rot and damping-off disease in a variety of horticultural and agricultural crops. Despite their morphological resemblance to fungi, oomycetes are distinct organisms, and Pythium species are notoriously difficult to control due to their ability to form resilient oospores in the soil.
The pathogen affects a wide range of hosts, including ornamental plants and vegetable seedlings. Greenhouse environments are particularly susceptible to outbreaks, as the constant humidity and temperature profiles create an ideal breeding ground for the organism to infect young, vulnerable root systems.
The primary clinical signs of Pythium intermedium infection include root browning, softening, and tissue decay. Once the root system is compromised, the plant loses its ability to absorb water and essential nutrients, which is visually expressed through wilting, chlorosis, and stunted growth, ultimately leading to the total collapse of the plant.
Development and spread of the pathogen are accelerated by poor soil aeration, high substrate moisture, and inadequate drainage. It is typically introduced into clean growing areas via contaminated water sources, infested soil clinging to tools, or infected propagation material, which can lead to rapid transmission within a greenhouse block.
Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to maintain a healthy production environment:

- Optimizing irrigation practices to avoid waterlogging and root hypoxia.
