Description

Pythium irregulare is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen responsible for root rot and damping-off disease in a diverse range of crops. It thrives in moist conditions and acts as a primary invader, targeting seeds, seedling roots, and the roots of mature plants, leading to severe physiological stress and often plant death.

This pathogen has a very broad host range, affecting essential crops such as cereals, vegetables, legumes, and ornamental plants. It is particularly devastating in greenhouse environments where high humidity and constant irrigation provide an ideal climate for the zoospore movement of the organism towards the host roots.

The characteristic symptoms include the failure of seeds to germinate or the sudden collapse of young seedlings. In mature plants, the roots appear brown, water-soaked, and necrotic, losing their outer cortex. Above-ground symptoms are often secondary, manifesting as stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), wilting during peak sunlight, and eventually complete plant collapse.

Development is highly favored by saturated soil conditions, high humidity, and poor drainage. The pathogen is disseminated easily via contaminated irrigation water, infested soil clinging to tools, or infected propagation material. Temperature fluctuations can also trigger the release of dormant oospores, which allow the pathogen to persist in the field for many years.

Management of Pythium irregulare requires an integrated approach to minimize economic losses. Recommended practices include:

  • Using certified, fungicide-treated seeds.
  • Improving soil drainage and optimizing irrigation schedules to avoid stagnant water.
  • Maintaining greenhouse hygiene and sanitizing tools and containers.
  • Applying biocontrol agents like Trichoderma species or chemical fungicides when conditions for infection are high.
