Description
Pythium mamillatum is a soilborne oomycete pathogen notorious for causing root rot and damping-off disease in a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. Being an opportunistic pathogen, it remains dormant in the soil in the form of resilient oospores, which are triggered to germinate when specific environmental cues and host roots are nearby.
The host range for this pathogen is extensive, affecting numerous vegetable crops, particularly crucifers, as well as various cereal species. It specifically targets seedlings and young plants, invading the roots and causing cellular destruction, which prevents the uptake of water and essential mineral nutrients from the soil.
The characteristic symptoms include the browning and softening of root tissues, which often turn mushy and watery. Seedlings may collapse and die before or shortly after emergence, leading to significant stand loss and uneven crop establishment across the field or nursery beds.
The development and spread of Pythium mamillatum are strongly correlated with high soil moisture levels, poor drainage, and cool to moderate temperatures. The pathogen can be easily disseminated through contaminated irrigation water, infested soil clinging to machinery, and the movement of infected plant debris throughout the growing area.
Effective management strategies center on integrated pest management practices. These include ensuring proper soil drainage, utilizing disease-free planting materials, and implementing crop rotation.
