Pythium megalacanthum is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen notorious for causing root rot and damping-off disease in a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. Being a water mold, it thrives in wet conditions, attacking the roots of young seedlings and established plants alike, which significantly hampers agricultural productivity worldwide.
This pathogen exhibits a broad host range, infecting various vegetables, ornamental plants, and even certain cereal crops. It is particularly devastating in controlled environments like greenhouses and nurseries, where irrigation systems or hydroponic setups, if not properly managed, can facilitate the rapid spread of zoospores throughout the entire crop population.
Symptoms of the infection typically begin below ground, starting with the browning and necrosis of the root hairs and eventually leading to the decay of the primary root system. Above ground, the symptoms manifest as wilting, chlorosis, and stunted growth, which often lead to the collapse and death of the plant due to the disrupted uptake of water and essential nutrients.
