Description
The causative agent of the disease is the oomycete Pythium phragmitis, belonging to the group of water molds. This pathogen is a specialized organism that targets the root system and rhizomes of hydrophytic plants, causing systemic disruption of nutrient uptake and growth.
The primary host for this pathogen is the common reed (Phragmites australis). The disease is most commonly found in natural and artificial wetlands, marshes, and areas where reeds are grown for technical applications, such as biopurification systems or biomass production.
Symptoms of the infection include a gradual decline in the aerial parts of the plant, yellowing, and premature wilting of the leaves. Upon close examination of the root system, characteristic browning and rotting of the roots are visible. Infected tissues become soft and watery, eventually disintegrating, which prevents proper water and nutrient absorption.
The development and spread of the pathogen are directly linked to water conditions. High soil moisture, stagnant water, and waterlogging provide the ideal conditions for the release of zoospores, which move actively through the water to infect new hosts. Temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius are optimal for the rapid growth and colonization of the mycelium.
The harmfulness of Pythium phragmitis lies in the reduced productivity of reed beds and the potential for seedling mortality. In managed cultivation environments, the disease can lead to significant thinning of the stands, which compromises their structural integrity and their environmental utility as water filters.
