Description
The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Pythium porphyrae, a specialized parasite that targets marine red algae, specifically those in the genus Porphyra. This organism is well-known in the aquaculture industry as a major threat to commercial seaweed production.
The primary symptom of the infection is the development of discolored patches on the algal thallus. Initially, these spots appear pale and eventually turn yellow or reddish-brown. As the infection progresses, the tissues undergo significant degradation, leading to the formation of ragged holes and eventual disintegration of the entire blade.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly sea surface temperature. Outbreaks are most frequent when water temperatures rise above 15-20°C. High stocking densities exacerbate the problem, as the motility of the zoospores allows for rapid horizontal transmission of the pathogen throughout the cultivation site.
The economic impact of Pythium porphyrae is severe, often resulting in widespread mortality of the seaweed crop. Due to its rapid cycle of infection, the pathogen can devastate large areas of commercial seaweed farms in a very short amount of time, necessitating urgent management strategies.
