Description
The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Pythium spiculum, a soil-borne pathogen known for causing significant decay in the root systems of various plant species. It is a highly opportunistic organism that thrives in aquatic environments within the soil matrix.
It primarily attacks vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and seedlings within greenhouse environments. The pathogen exploits the lack of natural defense mechanisms in young root tissues, leading to rapid colonization and destruction of the plant's vascular integrity.
Key symptoms include the browning and soft rot of root tips, often leading to a complete collapse of the root system. Above ground, affected plants exhibit stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and sudden wilting. The decay spreads rapidly, often resulting in complete stand loss in intensive cultivation systems.
Development and spread are triggered by excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and high humidity levels. Pythium spiculum produces motile zoospores that migrate through water films in the soil to reach new hosts. The pathogen can persist for long periods in the soil, making eradication difficult.
